This is significant: the president is set to host the Saudi crown prince this week. The two will talk about the country’s shared interests, as well as having Saudi Arabia at least ‘recognize’ Israel as a country…if not join the Abraham accords…which is the goal for president trump and his administration.
That step would be so huge that it would literally change the nature of the middle east and what the overall situation has been there for 70 years.
See-Iran’s mullahs are the regional bullies who don’t get along with the Saudis or most of the leaders of the other countries in the middle east because they are tribal enemies.
But now with Iran largely neutralized and unable to bully the others…or retaliate against Saudi Arabia if the crown prince was to ‘dare’ to recognize Israel or start trading with them-
Well, now there is an opening for the Saudis to move forward with this-And -we hope- to help bring a larger stability and more peaceful temperament to the entire region.
So, this meeting is huge.
And, of course, all the lefty news media want to talk about- and all you are likely to hear about over the next few days- is Jamal Khashoggi- the quote.’ journalist’ who was brutally murdered when he returned to the middle east….and probably on the orders of this crown prince.
The real story is that Khashoggi was at least a ‘double agent’ and maybe even a ‘triple agent’ who was spying on and betraying the leaders of Saudi Arabia…and …gee…ended up being brutally murdered for it.
And it-was- a horrific and inhumane death, yes. But…in that part of the world…if you engage in dangerous games…’stuff happens’. And could happen to you.
And so, as i explained at the time, the Khashoggi murder was terrible, but it was no excuse to break ties with Saudi Arabia…or give up the delicate relationship we have had with them-as a country - as the ‘best choice out of all the bad options’ we had when it came to friends or allies in that region.
There is no ‘perfect’ US ally in the middle east. You must deal with the ‘best of the worst when you form alliances and go about promoting your own country’s agenda over there.
This is what American leaders have done with Saudi Arabia over the decades.
Moreover, this young crown prince -is-trying to modernize that country in terms of religious and political beliefs in order to drag it into the 21st century.
And no- women still aren’t treated equally and their government still tolerates all sorts of human rights abuses…etc.
He isn’t really ‘westernizing’ Saudi Arabia…but he is at least taking steps. And I’d argue that we should be encouraged by us in the west- not discouraged.
And so- it is huge that he’s agreed to come to America and meet with trump on these things- and- bring a delegation of Saudi businessmen to make connections in that manner, too.
It had to be- based on logic and reason. It’s idiotic to break ties with Saudi Arabia over the killing of a double agent whom their leaders were upset with.
Real leaders need to make hard choices. And this was a hard choice. Trump has made the right choice, joe Biden and Anthony Blinken, not surprisingly, made the wrong choice.
American diplomacy was affected by both decisions. So far, trump is the only president to have any sort of significant win or significant movement toward peace in the middle east since carter. His Abraham accords were the biggest breakthrough in 40 years…and they continue to be built upon-in terms of better relations with Israel-for the five or six Muslim countries who agreed to them in trump’s first term.
Back them- having Saudi Arabia join them some day was a distant dream. Unlikely to ever happen. Now, just a few years later and with the regional bully delt with…. now they look quite plausible…and even ‘likely’ to happen before the end of trump’s second term.
This is a big deal for America, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the larger world. And so, if president trump isn’t talking about ‘affordability’ this week and his critics on both sides of the aisle are pounding him for it-
Then, so what...
