I find this interesting: Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan isn’t hesitating to spend a huge amount of money on her legal defense- after she was arrested for aiding an illegal escape from ICE.
The j/s says Steven Biscupic will be leading Dugan’s legal team ...and he’s impressive. Biscupic was a very good federal prosecutor here in Milwaukee in the early 2000s...and was appointed by a conservative to the position: George w. Bush. So, Dugan hired a conservative leaning-career federal prosecutor- who is now in private practice to defend her.
That’s a shrewd move: hire someone who knows what sort of case the feds are likely to bring against her-and who knows the best way to defend it.
She’s also hired a former US Solicitor General, Paul Clement. The journal’ piece says: as solicitor general from 2005 to 2008, clement argued more than 100 cases before the US Supreme Court.
Folks- he is also a conservative who was appointed by George W. Bush. It’s interesting how a flaming lib- like Hannah Dugan- rushes to conservatives when she, herself, needs lawyers. It’s almost like she knows which ones are the competent ones...and that trusting liberal defense attorneys with her life....is more likely to land her in federal prison.
Huh.
She’s hired three or four others, too, to be on here legal defense team. This is just a few days after being arrested.
Folks, Hannah Dugan has quickly gone out and hired an ‘OJ Simpson’ sort of defense team. She’s not going with one lawyer- or even one firm. She’s handpicking who she believes is ‘the best’ in town...to take her case.
Wow.
And hey, I’m impressed. Dugan isn’t fooling around. She knows her career and her personal life is ‘on the line’ here.
I don’t know if she’s playing for an early dismissal of the charges, here, by bringing in more legal firepower than she needs....
Or whether she’s playing for a jury trial to clear her name in some sort of dramatic fashion...but...
It’s got the legal community talking.
We’ve had Dan Lennington on the air. He’s an attorney with the Wisconsin Institute of Law and Liberty-and he had a long post on X that I find interesting.
Lennington’s take is, first- this is a fantastic legal team whose fees are so costly that there aren’t many people in Wisconsin who could even afford to hire this type of defense.
I’d agree.
Yes. This is high stakes on both sides-and you’ve got to assume that pam Bondi and the people atop Trump’s Dept of Justice are going to put extra pressure on the federal prosecutors here in Milwaukee to take this case to trial and get a conviction.
I’d be surprised if it ends in a plea deal for that reason, but you never know.
But -Hannah Dugan didn’t just ‘lawyer up’...she ‘armed herself for battle’. Which is smart for someone in her position.
I’d also point out the contrast here: this is a smart and savvy move...after her the very dumb and emotional move that got her into trouble in the first place.
She wasn’t thinking clearly-or being smart-when she decided she was above the law...and screamed at ice officials...and committed federal crimes by hustling an illegal alien out the back door...
But...gee...that cold concrete and the solid bars of a jail cell got her thinking more clearly, again.
