What have we given-up over the past year? I bet you don’t realize just how much the coronavirus has taken from us.
We have to wear a face mask to buy milk, we cannot watch our kids play sports much less the Brewers, we have to sometimes wait in the cold to get into a store, we can’t go to weddings, funerals, even church services. For the longest time we couldn’t eat at a restaurant, and in some places you still cannot. We face fines for trying to open businesses, or for not wearing your mask properly while trying to fly to Orlando. We’ve accepted the rule-by-fiat of unelected health bureaucrats, and we are shamed if we don’t agree. Many of our kids are missing now their third semester of school. They will never get that back.
And what for? Because of a virus that 97 percent of people survive? No. We have given all of this up, had all of this taken from us because the government told us.
Governments, from local health boards, to governors like Tony Evers, to Congress and President Biden have ordered lockdowns and restrictions for months.
And they will continue for months to come. Karol Markowicz at the New York Post has a piece that talks about the push for a ‘forever pandemic.’
On Thursday, President Biden delivered remarks to the National Institutes of Health while wearing a mask. Standing on a stage, the president said he had consulted with government gurus Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Francis Collins about removing his mask and noted that despite being 10 feet away from people, “it’s important that I not.”
Why is it important that he not? “You know that wearing this mask through the next year here can save lives, a significant number of lives,” the president said.
Come again? The United States is on track to have about 70 percent of the population vaccinated by September. Why would we mask through next year?
The president said the same thing Tuesday night in Milwaukee. He added that maybe by Christmas we can get close to back to normal.
She goes on:
The mask was never supposed to be a social symbol, a political statement or a virtue signifier. It was supposed to help slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. Once we have mass vaccination, masking becomes an odd personality trait — and it could easily become permanent. Let’s not allow that to happen.
Now is our time for choosing: Do we want to take the “forever pandemic” path? Or do we accept and celebrate the miraculous science behind the vaccines and move on from this painful episode?
