Republicans don't hate poor people.

If this is how Democrats show their love for poor people, count me out.

State Sen. Jon Erpenbach, D-Middleton said at Thursday's budget hearing that Republicans, essentially, hate poor people.

"Within one motion we are taking away access to the lowest of the low income here in the state of Wisconsin when it comes to healthcare. And we're taking away a minimum wage increase," Erpenbach, said. "I will let people draw their own conclusions on that. But if you are poor in Wisconsin, I would strongly suggest you move to another state."

All because Republicans refused to expand Medicaid to cover mostly young men who could be working.

Erpenbach's claim is that by denying poor people another government hand out, that Republicans are showing their hate.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Republicans want to help poor people be less poor. Can Democrats say the same?

Another government handout just keeps people dependent on the government, forces people to stay under certain salary levels, and squashes the desire to work.

It is not hateful to want to help people stand on their own feet. In fact, helping people become independent is one of the most loving things you can do.
