audio version of the segment here > Democrats will keep Schumer's Shutdown going through tomorrow
Jay Weber Show transcript 11-3-25
I’m sticking with my prediction that the government shutdown ends right after tomorrow’s election. I’ll be shocked if it’s still going by the end of the week.
It was clear last week that the democrats knew they were in a bind and had to end this thing: after all, their own party and union loyalists were starting to abandon them and call on them to reopen the government.
But-they can’t ‘cave’ and disappoint their activist voters until after they get out and vote on Tuesday.
So, democrat leadership realized they simply had to hunker down- message their stupidity over another weekend-and wait for the election to be over. Every republican on capitol hill knew this was going to be the case, too.
And Donald Trump should have. Which is why it was stupid for president trump to call on republicans to kill off the filibuster and reopen government on Friday. And I mean stupid.
There’s no way to soft sell it: Speaker Johnson and majority leader Thune really had Schumer and the democrats on the ropes late last week. The only thing they needed to do was keep pounding them in the head and gut until the democrat trainers tossed in the towel.
And here comes trump tossing a wrench in the ring: end the filibuster and reopen government. Really stupid.
Especially since he knew Thune and the republicans weren’t going to do it.
And i want to be clear: even if Trump believes the democrats are only going to do it, anyway, the next time they get into office-
He didn’t need to say it- last Friday. At this critical juncture.Save that for some other day...after this shutdown is over.
I understand both the ‘sentiment’ and the ‘frustration’.... but the president is wrong on this: being the party to take away that firewall – which has kept the worst extremes of both parties ‘in check’ for centuries- is stupid.
Trump says ‘eliminate it so we can ram the republican agenda home’...
But what is that agenda?
What agenda-can Trump and the GOP put into place-that keeps the democrats from getting back into office...and destroying the country by stealing control of the supreme court and giving Puerto Rico and dc statehood to rig congress...and steal control over elections away from the states...etc.
The republican’s overall agenda is ‘protect America and try to keep the status quo. We want capitalism. We want the constitution. We want law and order and closed borders.
Okay. Then the filibuster remains an important ‘wall’ to keep the democrat’s America-hating, socialist, constitution-crushing agenda at bay.
Why would you make it easier for them to do all that the next time they find themselves with the majority, again?
There is no ‘counter agenda’ that can block the democrats from that America-destroying agenda if they have the numbers to do it.
So why would you ‘lower the numbers in the senate and make it easier for them to do?
Trump’s theory is wrong-and put pressure on his own party members-
To pivot and stab his own allies in the ribs as they get ready for a shutdown victory here- was stupid.
That said, senator Thune and numerous other GOP leaders slid in to shoot down trump’s demands...and the basics of this shutdown remain-as they have been. With both the white house and the congressional republicans feeling like they have several ways to play this to get the democrats to crack.
Phil Wegman is the White House reporter for RealClearPolitics-and says this:
PHILIP WEGMANN, REALCLEARPOLITICS: My sources at White House are dug in right now. They're not worried about that type of polling, because I think that as we look at the shutdown, at the very beginning the pain was localized, certainly unfortunate, but it fell on federal workers and on some of these military families. Now it's at risk of metastasizing.
It's not just these families on SNAP. It's also these mothers on WIC, the air traffic controllers who are working without pay. And I think that on the first day of the shutdown, Vice President J.D. Vance, he said, look, we're willing to negotiate on Obamacare at a later date once you reopen the government. Now, this week, he's in the White House driveway with the Teamsters, with union members, attacking Democrats on another front. This White House feels like as the pain metastasizes, they want it to end, but they feel like they have multiple angles of attack here on Democrats.
Yes....Trump’s silly little ‘filibuster ditty’ pulled focus away from the fact that the democrats’ own labor unions were breaking ranks...and appearing with trump officials late last week....as they called on Schumer and the democrats to give up their silly games.
From the beginning, Trump and republicans have held all of the cards. It’s why so many people said Schumer was stupid to insist on the shutdown in the first place.
It was really a stupid move...and trying to save face by ‘outlasting’ trump and republicans was just as dumb.
I believe the democrats would have caved late last week if it wasn’t for the elections they need to win in the blue states tomorrow.
There is no doubt that Schumer and the democrats never considered that this ‘shutdown of food stamps’ was going to come before they had three big democrat races on the ballot to win tomorrow.
And so, all they can do is ‘ride it out’ until Wednesday.
And so-at least until Wednesday-the democrat keep hurting their own voters...and their own carefully curated ‘welfare cases’.
And i know that-on Friday-two lower court federal judges insisted trump’s white house
Use emergency funds to keep funding snap- which is an outrageous violation of the separation of powers-by the way-
But trump’s white house team has made it clear for weeks now that they feel like they cannot legally do that.
And so, if i was trump, I would seriously -ignore-those court orders and insist that it was going to at least take an appeals court decision to force a resumption of snap benefits...
But the net result is that ‘no one quite knows’ what the snap situation is this morning.
No, the USDA did not send out the money that was meant to ‘recharge’ the EBT cards and dole out the food stamps.... but...I wouldn’t expect any quick action to get it done-even with this court order.
My guess is that the shutdown will be over before either the court case-or the Trump administration- move ahead with any new funding source.
In short: everyone waits ‘til Wednesday. After election day when his political cave-in won’t negatively affect turnout, Schumer will roll out his excuse to cave.
This is probably over by Friday or Monday.
Still, it takes a week or more to load the snap cards in most states- while some governors and mayors have stepped in to use state funding to cover the shortfalls- Tony Evers hasn’t.
Instead, he too, decided to play hollow political games...and put out ‘trump slamming’ posts on social media...while doing nothing.
Remember- Tony Evers controls hundreds of millions of dollars in a covid slush fund that he built for himself to use to dole out political favors. I called on him early to use that money. Dan O’Donnell confirms that there’s still something like 300-million dollars that Evers was supposed to use to combat covid, buy never did. He’s still sitting on the covid slush fund.
Just use that. Nope. Not tony. Because he’s a typical democrat: they don’t really care about you or ‘we, the people.’ it’s all about playing rancid political games for them.
Tony Evers and his team are no different.
