Oh…. I love this. Love this. Beating democrats at their own game. Democrats in Texas and dc are in ‘full freak out mode’ this week after the department of justice found the Texas congressional district maps illegal.
Uh-oh.
The conclusion was that several districts in Texas are illegally gerrymandered…so…the Trump DOJ and Texas governor Greg Abbott are calling for a quick ‘redo’ of the state’s congressional maps before next falls’ election.
You can imagine the furious freakout that is ensuing on the left…given that republican prospects for keeping control of the house next fall are ‘not good’. Historically, it should be a good election for democrats- and as it is- republicans only have a three to five vote margin in the house.
Additionally- you’ve got leftists in blue states like Wisconsin trying to redraw maps to give democrats new advantages.
Here in Wisconsin, yet another leftist appeal has been made to the Wisconsin supreme court to ‘find an excuse’ to redraw our district maps here. If the liberal members of the court give the go-ahead- democrats would like to ‘redraw’ Derrick van Orden and Brian Steil’s districts and turn them into democrat ones.
And so- ‘turnabout is fair play’ in this instance-for all those democrat activists and whiners who keep trying to cheat the maps to their advantage-across the country.
In Texas-you’ve had a legitimate DOJ ruling saying ‘there’s a problem with the Texas maps. There’s this ‘area here’ that is unconstitutionally gerrymandered. And so, Abbott and trump are both leaping to get it fixed-because it could work out to the GOP’s advantage-and shockingly- could lead to up to five more seats for the GOP?
Wow.
Listen to Donald Trump, who, very casually addressed this Tuesday....
I love the cavalier nature of his answer. Yeah, so, there’s that spot in Texas there that needs to be redrawn. We aren’t talking about a major redraw. Just cleaning it up. It should get us about five seats. What!
Every democrat was shocked. Just shocked!
Here we go again with the trump cheating. Here we go again-with ‘democracy in danger’ under this president! Even though their party and its activists have been engaging in this same scummy game for nearly two decades now…with groups like eric holder’s and Marc Elias’s crisscrossing the country trying to rig the electoral maps in their favor- often by forced court order.
And yes-they’re going to rush to court to try to block any Texas redraw.
It’s what has me thinking that the litigation-alone-like means that this new Texas map with its five new GOP seats isn’t going to be in play by next fall. But. We’ll see.
The conservative website ‘red state’ describes it this way: In a move that left democrats stunned and fuming, Governor Abbott has called a special session so that the GOP-controlled legislature can redraw the Texas congressional lines. The projection is that republicans could pick up as many as five seats, most of which would be in the Rio Grande area.
and here’s the thing: if Wisconsin dems can insist they are under-represented in the Wisconsin map- it looks like Texas republicans-really are! - underrepresented on their congressional map.
Red state says Texas currently has 38 total congressional seats with only 25 being held by the GOP despite Texas being dark red….and a republican legislative super majority in the state.
The story says: the news of the special session sent national democrats into a panic. House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries called an emergency meeting and urged his party members in Texas to take "extraordinary actions" to prevent the redistricting from happening.
The call lasted for more than two hours, with Hakeem Jefferies and the chairman of the democratic national committee, ken martin, speaking with about 40 democrats in the Texas house.
Jeffries called the coming special session an all-hands-on-deck moment that would require extraordinary actions to block Mr. Trump and Texas republicans, according to a person ‘in on’ the call.
In fact, an early plan by the dems in the Texas statehouse will sound familiar to you- because our pouty-baby democrats did it here in 2010: a walk out.
Quote- as of now, the plan seems to be a walkout (in the state capitol) to deny a voting quorum. And actually, Texas democrats did the same thing in 2021, trying to block an elections reform bill.
They ran to Washington and sang songs in front of the capitol, but ultimately, they failed.
Apparently, though, in Texas- there are mechanisms to force lawmakers back into session-beyond trying to seek them out, arrest them, and bring them back to the capitol. That-could-be done if the leaders of the legislature ‘so ordered’ …but it sounds like Texas has rules where-in
Fines can also be levied by the day, and that will add up quickly to tens of thousands of dollars per democrat member if they stay away from Austin for very long. There's also been some speculation that Abbott could declare their seats vacant if they run away and deny a quorum, given they are required by law to appear. How doable that is, i'm not sure, but again, it seems all options are on the table as both sides are ready to go to war over this.
But folks- I love this news-and this move. We’ve been watching slippery, nasty, game-playing democrats engage in these ‘map’ antics since at least 2010…when Obama and holder and the democrats of that era decided that they were going to take an ‘all out warfare’ sort of approach against republicans.
That’s the era in which the dems started to nationalize every state attorney general position. And every ‘big city’ district attorney position. And decide that ‘everything’ was warfare. Even when it came to trying to get legitimately drawn and approved district maps- tossed out and redrawn.
This is yet another instance of: if this is really the way the opposition wants to act- or ‘play the game’...well then, our side shouldn’t sit on its hands and do nothing.
Also: what the average American doesn’t know and doesn’t think about is: the experts and insiders have already started to look at the changes coming after the 2030 census- and remember: California has seen a mass exodus of people. New York has seen a mass exodus of people. Illinois has seen some erosion…etc.
This means that the next time the house of representatives is ‘rebalanced’ and the number of congressmen that each state gets is determined- these big blue states are going to be losing some seats in the house.
I think most people in this audience understand that each house member represents a ‘certain chunk’ of the populus.
Each state gets two senators-but then gets ‘however many’ members of congress and electoral votes as they need to divide up their population into house districts. The more populous states-the more seats and electoral votes they get. Correct?
Well-the current projections are that- after the 2030 census- California’s loss of population means that state is going to be losing probably four house seats. New York will lose at least two. Illinois is expected to lose at least one. Maybe two. Also, Oregon and Rhode Island-as blue states-could lose one.
A few projection models also have Wisconsin and Minnesota losing a seat each.
So, you can see why dems have extra reason to worry.
Meanwhile, Texas and Florida are expected to gain at least four.
Arizona, Utah, and Idaho are red states that are expected to gain one each…
This is ‘all’ to the GOP advantage…and it’s something the DMC’s strategists are already worried about.
