Why is the state of Wisconsin starting construction on a Milwaukee green-space project in November?
Because the eyes of the world are coming to Milwaukee next summer.
The official line from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is that the project has been in the works for years. The reality of the situation is that someone is finally dealing with Milwaukee's homeless problem.
But how long will it last?
Certainly Milwaukee and the state will keep the city clean for the Democratic National Convention. Clearing the tent city under Milwaukee's underpass is just the first step. Expect more 'beautification projects' to come in the next few months.
But what about next fall? The spring and summer after that?
Will the Democrats who run Milwaukee, and run the state for now, keep the political will to help the city's homeless by expecting them to find a home or stay in a shelter? Will the same leaders be able to stand-up to the advocates who want to allow the homeless to stay drunk, or drug addicted, and on the streets?
Helping the homeless is more than just moving them out of sight. And it is more than letting them return once next summer's visitors to Milwaukee leave.
