Democrats are correct in saying that words matter.
They unfortunately don't seem to think that their words matter. Or perhaps they don't take time to listen to the things that they are saying.
We've been bombarded since the weekend shootings with the narrative that President Trump said some mean things days, week, months, or years ago. Therefore he is to blame for the tragedies in El Paso and Dayton. But that narrative is coming from the very same people who have been calling the president a racist, or a homophobe, or a white supremacist for years. If his comments about immigrants matter, then their comments that the president is evil matters as well.
Words do matter. But it's not just the president who needs to watch what he says.
