The Miss America pageant will no longer hold a swimsuit portion of the competition, the organization announced Tuesday.

Without the swimsuit segment, contestants will no longer be judged on physical appearance. Instead, they’ll replace the swimsuit modeling with live interaction between the judges and the state titleholders.

“We are no longer a pageant,” said Gretchen Carlson, chair of the Board of Trustees for the Miss America Organization, during an interview on ABC’s “GMA.”

“We are a competition,” she added.

There also will no longer be an evening gown portion and instead the contestants will wear an outfit that best represents their style.
