The left tries to tear apart Trump's tariff deals

Jay Weber Show transcript 7-29-25

As you might expect, the Trump-haters and cynics were working hard yesterday to poo-poo and downplay the importance of the major trade deal that president trump agreed to with the 27 EU countries.

Lefty spinners immediately tried to insist it was a ‘bad thing’ that under President Trump, Americans ‘come first’ when it comes to getting the better deal. It was an odd sort of criticism that popped up on social media from the left yesterday, and verified, yet again, how many ‘America haters’ are on the left. Even when they deny it.

If any democrat is going to take to social media in order to decry a trade deal that gives American businesses and consumers the better end of the deal- then they tend to fall into that category of ‘America haters’...

And we’ve got a whole lot of them in this country right now: a whole lot of people who only seem to criticize and bemoan anything positive that happens to this country.

And Trump’s trade deal with the EU is positive. On paper, it’s the biggest trade deal ever made ...with European nations promising to pay a 15 percent tariff on all goods shipped here- as tariffs on virtually all US goods shipped there see zero tariff-as well as promising to spend 600-billion dollars on new American made military equipment-

And- commit to 750-billion dollars’ worth of US energy- i assume that’s going to be primarily liquid natural gas- which many of those countries are now buying from Vladimir Putin and Russia-even though some of them are ‘at war’ with him in Ukraine.

This is one part of the deal that the skeptics hopped on immediately saying most of the energy companies in Europe who would be in the market for US energy are private companies...and so, the EU nations cannot promise to buy 750-billion dollars of it. Well, okay, fine...but their governments can encourage their energy sector to hit that goal-and can encourage those private companies to see the wisdom in buying ‘western natural gas’ over Putin’s.

I suppose they could ban those companies from buying from Russia, if they really wanted to, but it’s probably not going to come to that: most European nations that have come to rely on Russian oil and gas have been trying to find alternatives to it since the Ukraine war started. Trump is offering them an alternative as part of this trade agreement.

One reason the market reactions were more ‘mixed’ to the announcement of this trade deal than expected- is that the individual leaders of some of these EU nations thought they got screwed.

Everyone, globally, could see how lopsided the deal was-in favor of the US. Again. Only America-haters and Trump critics-here-would portray that as a negative.

The EU president admitted that the only real concession that was made by trump and the Americans was to impose a fifteen percent tariff on their goods instead of the 30 percent one that trump had been threatening.

In fact- that’s the biggest ‘general reaction’ from these EU member nations: we agreed to the deal because it could have been far worse.

Folks-this is an acknowledgement that having access to the US market is the absolute most important thing to all these countries.

The foreign leaders after this was announced were all saying basically the same thing: it ensures our country’s companies retain access to the American markets....and finally restores some certainty for our own business leaders and economies....

And we basically agreed to everything Trump and the Americans wanted because it could have been far worse. If we want access to the American consumer-this is the sort of lopsided deal, we are going to have to put up with.

Again-you can criticize trump for that if you want to-but i don’t know why you would- as an American whose country is getting the better end of all of these lopsided trade deals that are starting to be finalized.

This trade deal, the one reached with the Japanese-

These are major trade deals coming together that are going to really help this country move forward.

And they are coming with some eyepopping promises of new investments from foreign countries and foreign businesses here- and so- even if that ‘750-billion-dollar investment’ from the e-u doesn’t completely pan out.... gee...did it end up being a 500-billion-dollar investment in this country? A 300-billion-dollar investment?

And that’s bad- how?

Well, it wasn’t as much as Trump suggested.

Okay. Tell that to the thousands of people who got great new jobs out of the hundreds of billions that-were spent- and then come back and whine about how it didn’t turn out to be ‘everything’ Trump promised. See if that really matters to the country.

These are turning out to be lopsided deals-in our favor-that trump’s team is making with the 20 to 30 absolute ‘largest’ u-s trading partners.

We’ve talked about this in the past: there are 190 countries around the globe. We trade with 130 of them. But only about 20 to 30 are major trading partners- and the EU is-the! - largest...as block of 27 western nations under one regional banner.

The Wall St Journal reports:

Companies Welcome EU-U.S. Trade Deal as Least Bad Outcome

That’s interesting to hear. I never would have guessed that. But Wall St Journal says trade between the two sides meant a total of 1.9-trillion dollars in commerce last year....

With the US trade deficit for goods ending up at about 235 billion.

That means we were on the shorter end of the ‘trading stick’ by about 235 billion. Okay. The partnership benefited both sides. American companies profited handsomely, yes...

But trump and his team want to see an equation that is closer to even. And they’re going to get it.

These two global economies- if you combine the

U-s economy with the European economy- account for 44 percent of all global GDP.  It’s a massive alliance that fuels both economies and the larger world-

And now a trade war has been averted just days before an important deadline.

That had president Trump announcing in Scotland yesterday that -all remaining trade deals- are likely to look like this.

So, you see, there’s an amount of naysaying and whining related to the deal President Trump and his team have cut.

So what?

They have hard commitments on a fifteen percent tariff put on all incoming goods- no tariffs on our outgoing goods-

And-as a kicker- 600-billion dollars of purchased US weaponry.  Any boost in energy sales is simply icing on the cake, if you ask me.

The bottom line is: the US economy and the u-s worker is going to be rewarded for all of these deals- and some of them are likely to bring at least-some- manufacturing back to America longer term.

That’s not something to scoff at. It’s something to celebrate.
