Jay Weber Show transcript 9-12-24 6:10am
I feel like much of today’s show is going to be a combination of talking some of you ‘off the ledge’ after Donald Trump’s poor debate performance and doing a reset for you on ‘where we are in this race’...
Because...just 24 hours later...it’s already clear that my take on the debate yesterday was the correct one: Kamala Harris did nothing to show voters why she should have this job-
Nor did she give them any reason to believe that they think she can do it-
Folks- the focus groups and polling done afterward actually shows that Donald Trump swayed more people toward his side than Kamala Harris did-
And this is ‘focus grouping’ from liberal sources, like CNN, Reuters, CBS....
Moreover- we have to get over this notion that these debates ‘matter much’ when it comes to an end result in November.
In most instances, they don’t.
They just don’t.
There are rare exceptions, of course, such as the debate between Trump and Biden in June or July that displayed to the country-and the world- how old and feeble Joe Biden really is-
But most often- for as much importance as is put on these debates- they don’t make much of a difference.
That’s the category that I’d put this debate in now that it’s over.
And yes- Donald Trump missed an opportunity to really ‘put this race away’ with a stellar performance...
And yes.... someone like a Ron DeSantis who was a better debater would have cleaned Kamala’s clock...
Okay.
But it’s also true that Kamala Harris had an opportunity to really help herself out and prove that she represented a change from Joe Biden and really had ‘something special’ or different to offer the country-and she didn’t.
She blew it.
That was my ‘takeaway’ yesterday, and the focus grouping and polling that has come out over the last 24 hours or so proves it. This woman did virtually ‘nothing’ to help herself Tuesday night....
And we’ll get into that later.
But i want to start with this- for all of you handwringers who’ve been emailing me about how ‘trump blew it’.
I got to start with the reminder that- over three election seasons- Trump has ‘always blown it’ when it comes to debates....and who the media members and voters think ‘won or lost’ afterward.
Do you realize that this was Donald trump’s seventh presidential debate...and that he’s quote...lost.... six of the seven?
That’s Donald Trump’s true record on debates, even if most people tend to forget.
I haven’t forgotten: i haven’t seen Donald Trump do a good debate yet- including the one that knocked Biden out of the race.
He was good for the first half of that debate-but the net result was about ‘how bad Biden was’ and how feeble he looked- instead of being about anything trump said.
Out of seven debates, the polls afterward judged trump to be the loser of six of them. Trump allegedly lost all three to Hillary.
Remember?
And he still won in 2016. In 2020, he allegedly lost both debates to Biden...and then narrowly lost the election...but that was because he ran a clunky campaign and covid upset and erased every single voting rule we’ve ever put in place in this country.
So, look-Trump is Trump. We know what we ‘get’ by now. His performance Tuesday night is almost immaterial, in terms of what will decide this race: it’s Kamala Harris who has to prove she’s worthy of the job....or even has a fresh idea in her head...if she’s going to win this.
She was so practiced and programmed that- yeah-she might have surprised a few people as sounding more competent than they expected...but i can’t imagine that she’s going to get much of a bump in the polls out of this-and if she does- it’s bound to be temporary.
Why?
Because at the end of the day: the country is still screwed up...and she’s a member of the regime that screwed it up.
At the end of the day- 8 in 10 voters say they want this to be a ‘change’ election, and she’s the incumbent who represents more of the same misery. That’s why.
A Tipp poll taken right before the debate had Donald Trump leading on 8 of 10 top issues. And there are only three: economy, crime, and the border...
But...trump’s leading on virtually all of the issues voters say are important to them. In some instances-by wide margins.
And so, these current polls still show Donald Trump in a strong position to win. The most recent round of polling shows independents who might have gotten caught up in the initial hyping of Kamala Harris.... wandering back home toward Trump.
Donald trump is-currently- in a strong position to win, and i cannot imagine that the debate changed that. He’s certainly looking stronger than he ever did in 2016 or 2020....and he won one of those races and nearly won the second...and probably would have in a normal ‘non-covid’ year.
Then there’s the question of what undecided voters ‘really saw or experienced’ on Tuesday night, as all the pundits and smart people were telling them that they saw a great Kamala Harris victory.
Folks-CNN’s panel of undecided voters was split...with nearly six in ten of them still saying they trusted Donald trump more on the big issues afterward.
Reuters took a little longer to release their focus group results.... but you might have heard about them yesterday: out of the ten undecided voters Reuters interviews- they chose trump by two-to-one.
Oops.
That result doesn’t fit the mainstream narrative, does it?
Seven in ten voters say the country is on the wrong track....and in the most recent NY Times poll...only 25 percent of voters...
Just 25 percent said that kamala Harris ‘represents change’. Over half said Trump does.
I know we’re covering some of the same ground we did yesterday, but based on the flurry of emails i got yesterday, way too many listeners in this audience are forgetting that the basics of this race haven’t changed-
Including the fact that kamala Harris- cannot say- she and Joe Biden have fixed any of the country’s problems.
And that’s bad enough for the average president or vice president seeking re-election-
I mean- consider this: it’s bad enough that a president or veep seeking re-election cannot say that they have fixed any of the problems they’ve been faced with...
But when it comes to Joe and Kammy- they created the problems!!!
Never-ending inflation, high crime, open borders- a mess overseas-
This regime and members of their party created all those problems!!!
It’s bad enough to have to admit, ‘we didn’t fix anything’...it’s worse to admit ‘we can’t even fix any of the problems that-we!!- created!’.
Listen to JD Vance afterward. He was in the spin room talking to Jonathan Karl of ABC- one of the openly liberal hacks that they have on their staff at ABC-
And Vance’s ‘take’ was so strong...and so ‘right’...that you’ll hear Jonathan Karl butting in to try to shut him up. Karl wants this answer ‘to end’ because he knows Vance is telling some simple- devastating-truths here:
(play it)
Therefore, this debate won’t matter- by Monday.
Therefore, kamala Harris didn’t help herself out on Tuesday night by trying to distract from her own record and her own lack of ideas or accomplishments.
Oh...it was a bad night for Trump...
Was it?
Because unindoctrinated viewers saw Trump ‘being Trumpy’ as ABC’s moderators and kamala Harris attacked him with the same old nonsense...
And apparently- they were also listening when he talked about his superior economy and his closed border-
Because afterward- The majority of the ‘undecideds’ that ended up on the left-wing media panels all seemed to say the same thing: Trump had specifics. Kamala Harris didn’t. She still hasn’t impressed me in any way.
I wouldn’t call that a democrat ‘win’.
