Since this is my last day of work for the year-I thought I’d give people living in the city of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County- that as of the first of the year- those new sales taxes kick in that the lawmakers at all three levels agreed on- in order to get a new revenue-sharing deal completed.
Remember that state lawmakers agreed to allow the city of Milwaukee to implement a sales tax of ‘up to two percent’....and of course city leaders went right for the whole enchilada right away-
And so- a two percent-city sales tax- will go into effect as of the first of the year-
And i believe it represents the first time in Wisconsin history that a municipality was allowed to tax ‘sales of goods’ in their area. But this is what city leaders insisted they need...and dug in on.
And then there’s another half-cent sales tax that’s added to the half-cent tax that Milwaukee County already charges.
And i know, I know, the politicians and defenders will say...no, no it’s only .4 percent. Not .5 percent.
To that i say, pound sand. It’s another half-cent sales tax. You parce and naggle over a tiny difference like that. I’m not going to.
The net effect is that-as of 2024- any product that’s subject to the sales tax will now have you taxed at a nearly 8 percent rate if you buy it in the city of Milwaukee. The city will have a 7.9 percent sales tax-moving forward- in 2024.
Anything bought within any of the other communities in Milwaukee County will have you paying a six percent sales tax on it-
Again. No, no....5.9 percent Jay.
Shut up.
That’s six percent.
And so, for those people who watch their pennies and/or are careful spenders-there’s even less reason to go shopping for goods in Milwaukee County.
That’s the simple truth.
- The J/S lists the communities whose residents and shoppers will now be paying 5.9 percent:
Bayside - Brown Deer
- Cudahy
- Fox Point
- Franklin
- Glendale
- Greendale
- Greenfield
- Hales Corners
- Oak Creek
- River Hills
- Shorewood
- South Milwaukee
- St. Francis
- Wauwatosa
- West Allis
- West Milwaukee
- Whitefish Bay
Again. It’s not a ‘back breakers. And it won’t change most people’s behavior...but...the larger difference between the city of Milwaukee and those other suburbs- could.
