So. DeSantis did it.
He found the votes among his fellow republicans in Florida to strip the Disney company of a special governmental status that it has had in that state since the 1960s.
Wow.
Early last week, the belief was that DeSantis would fall short of support from his own party members because so many of them get campaign donations from Disney.
Ending this sort of special district status for Disney and other groups has been a topic of conversation among lawmakers over the last few years...but it was Disney’s decision to get overtly political on matters at the state capitol that became the last straw here, for most republicans.
Ron DeSantis was on with Tucker Carlson on Friday and said, look, Disney decided it was going to enter an unholy alliance with the activist left-and try to use its corporate power-against-the people of Florida....and we won’t stand for that.
As DeSantis put it: the left figures out that they can try to ‘subcontract out’ their leftism to some of these corporations-
And that’s a great way of putting it. These bullying activists on the left have been engaging in a campaign-for years now- trying bully, cajole, and trick the leaders of major corporations into ‘going woke’ or else.
We have talked about this trend on-and-off for years now, as well as the growing cry bulling of today’s young socialists and democrats.
We’ve talked about the extreme and idiotic ‘silence is violence’ campaign: their attempt to insist that no one can sit quietly on the sidelines-or remain agnostic- when it comes to their political activism: if you aren’t an activist for them-you are the enemy.
You can’t say ‘I’m not racist, so leave me out of it’. Oh, no. You must be an active anti-racist- for their causes-or you are as bad as any racist in the past. This is a tenet of critical race theory, and has become the wider position of the activist left: if you aren’t advocating for their woke causes right along with them-then you are the enemy.
And sadly, way too many CEO’s and corporate boards have allowed themselves to be bullied in this way-and cave to this activism.
And when they do, they become part of this scripted -organized-attempt by today’s activist left- to use the power of corporate America to fight their Marxist, anti-capitalist, anti-American fights for them.
As DeSantis says: these leftist activists are trying to ‘outsource’ or ‘subcontract out’ their activism- to the ‘willing’ heads of major corporations. Whether it’s Coke, or Disney, or MLB or the NBA....
And it is high time that we on the right, and Americans in general fight back.
It is certainly what has happened when it comes to Disney. The leaders of this company were stupid enough to believe the mischaracterizations of this parental rights bill-
They -completely fell-for the leftists’ misinformation campaign- and then overreacted to a small group of their employees who insisted this was an anti-gay, anti-trans bill-and the company had to use its clout to block it.
The CEO and his corporate dopes fell for that- and joined the wrong side of a political fight. 75 percent of Florida voters, including 59 percent of democrat voters-were in favor of DeSantis’ parental rights bill- so Disney blundered into taking the wrong side of it- and insulting their customer base-
It was-really-stupid.
And then, for some reason, doubled and tripled down when they started taking corporate heat! They did about the dumbest thing they could have done and -promised- that they were going to sexualize and politicize all their future content for kids...
By God...we are going to make sexualizing children a new mission!!
What?
How incredibly dumb, that was, and instead of diverting and de-escalating a showdown with republicans over it- they escalated-
And virtually dared DeSantis and the GOP to take away their special elevated status in Florida.
At every step, Disney’s CEO and managers have bleeped this up. A columnist named Jim Newell is down in Florida-and for perspective- says- in Florida’s statehouse- one of the biggest rules was ‘don’t screw with Disney’.
Even now- post vote- people on both sides of the aisle are skeptical that this reedy creek district will be dissolved because it would be a pain for everyone. All of Disney’s ‘government services’ would have to be absorbed by the county, from police and fire to wastewater treatment, to maintaining roads- it would be a huge new burden for the county...
And so- there’s a desperate hope that Disney execs and DeSantis’ office can work something out here, to create a new special district for Disney, after they do a meaculpa to DeSantis and kiss is ring.
But he doesn’t seem to be the sort that would have done this all for a bluff. DeSantis is a real conservative-who is of the belief that these special districts in Florida are wrong. Not just the one Disney has.
But this is all conjecture from the same Florida media members who never thought DeSantis was serious in the first place, and then never thought he would get the votes to strip Disney of this status.
He did.
And it’s only been a few days-but so far- he’s not talking as if this was just some ‘power move’ to try to impress conservative voters.
Disney’s execs-as the state’s biggest employer-thought that they were ‘bigger than government’. Probably because they’ve been told that, for decades. This CEO and the other Disney execs-clearly- thought they had the clout to ‘shame’ and ‘marginalize’ governor DeSantis and the Florida State GOP over this parental rights bill.
And they were very, very wrong.
And what DeSantis has done here-is send a very important message to corporate America:you’d better think twice about allowing your corporation to become some new ‘arm’ of the activist left. Stick to yah business....is a message that has been sent-loud and clear, here.
And I love it.
This is-absolutely- a long-overdue warning shot from conservatives that we are no longer going to look the other way when it comes to these never-ending, leftist culture wars.
And it’s the first warning shot to corporate America: enough of this pandering to the leftists. Stay out of the culture wars
It’s going to take conservative culture warriors to bend the country back toward having these CEOs stay out of politics. We need to make the backlash against these companies-hurt. It needs to be very real.
Last year, Delta and Coca-Cola got sucked into the war over voter integrity legislation-and felt the backlash. As did major league baseball.
Good. They all appear to have learned a lesson.
The NBA went ‘all in’ on black lives matter-and saw ratings drop. Especially when the move served to highlight how hypocritical and situational the league and its stars are: they won’t stand up against -real-human rights atrocities like slavery in China...
But they will engage in cheap virtue signaling here. That backfired.
Now Disney, and CNN, twitter, and Facebook are learning the lesson: there will be a price to pay if you continue with your leftist, anti-America, activism
