Proposed Heroes Fund Could Provide Essential Workers With Up To $25,000

Lawmakers are working on another coronavirus stimulus bill that would provide a boost to the frontline workers deemed essential during the global pandemic. The four-page proposal, which was introduced by Senate Democrats, calls for the creation of a "heroes fund" to provide hazard pay of up to $25,000 for employees working at hospitals, grocery stores, and other necessary industries.

"Not all heroes wear capes," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters. "For these Americans, working from home is not an option. Social distancing is not an option."

The $25,000 raise, which works out to be a $13 per hour increase, will be paid for by the COVID-19 Heroes Fund, which will "provide funds directly to eligible employer-partners."

In addition to creating a fund to pay for employees to get a raise, the proposal also creates a "$15,000 recruitment incentive for health and home care workers and first responders."

"We are asking these workers to take on great risk. They should be compensated for it," Schumer said. "These Americans are the true heroes of this pandemic, and we need to make sure they are taken care of. They are there for us, so we must be there for them."
