Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has been nominated as the United States Ambassador to Luxembourg, the White House confirmed Wednesday afternoon.
"The Dan O'Donnell Show" was first to report earlier in the day that Barrett would be President Biden's choice. His nomination will be sent to the U.S. Senate for confirmation.
Barrett has served as Milwaukee's mayor since 2004. Prior to that, he served for a decade in the U.S. House of Representatives and in the Wisconsin Senate and Assembly before that. He has not yet indicated when he will resign as mayor.
Once he does, Milwaukee Common Council President Cavalier Johnson will serve as acting mayor until a special election is held to fill the remainder of Barrett's term, which expires in 2024.
