A Sign of the Times

Johnny Manhattan's, an Italian steakhouse in Hubertus, Wisconsin, has posted a note to its menus urging customers to be patient with its shorthanded staff because "no one wants to work anymore."

"We are short staffed," the message reads. "Please be patient with the staff that did show up. No one wants to work anymore."

On the restaurant's website, a pop-up informs visitors that it is "now hiring servers and bartenders" and links to an online application.

Businesses across the country have reported struggling to fill open positions as the nation comes out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many blame the Biden Administration's extension of the Lost Wages Extension program, which pays unemployed workers an additional $300 per week in benefits.

"This is just paying people not to work," Wisconsin Congressman Bryan Steil said Saturday. "It's madness."

Steil joined fellow Wisconsin Republican congressmen and Senator Ron Johnson in calling for Governor Tony Evers to end the $300 payments to incentivize a return to work.

Evers has indicated that he will not. The additional payments are set to expire in September.
