Appleton Radio Host Fired for Rush Limbaugh Remarks

WAPL Radio morning show host Len Nelson has been fired after saying in a Facebook post that "the world is a better place without Rush Limbaugh in it" following Limbaugh's death last month.

"After careful consideration of all contributing factors, including violations of our employment policies, WAPL and Woodward Group have decided to end morning host Len Nelson's employment," WAPL said in a statement posted to the station's Facebook page Monday.

Nelson had been the station's morning host alongside Rick McNeal since 2003 and had a prior stint on the air from 1985 to 1999. WAPL said in its statement that McNeal would continue to work on the station's morning show.

Nelson had been suspended indefinitely following backlash to his post, which he wrote hours after Limbaugh died on February 17.

"We are deeply committed to being good people," WAPL said in a statement announcing the suspension the following day. "We appreciate our listeners, sponsors and advertisers and want to assure each one of you this matter is being addressed swiftly."

Nelson apologized for his post, which he deleted shortly after his suspension.

"While I was no fan of Limbaugh for a multitude of reasons, my post clearly disrespected him and, in turn, disrespected those who were his fans and those who feel that what I wrote was unbecoming, mean or even disgusting," he said. "In the post, I said that I do not celebrate his death but also do not feel sorrow for it. That was insensitive, uncalled for and unnecessary. For that, I am truly sorry."
