Milwaukee's Police Chief Wants to Reward Unlawful Behavior

Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales is responsible for enforcing the law in the city...except, it seems, for the laws he doesn't. Immigration law, in particular, isn't one of his favorites and he has now come out in favor of rewarding illegal entry into the United States.

At the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) national convention this week, Morales said he supports granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

“Maybe if we get in an accident we’re not going to flee from the police--because there’s no need to flee,” he said. “And for law enforcement, we need to identify who’s driving that vehicle when something happens. So it’s a win-win for all of us.”

It's hard to imagine that Morales is so ignorant that he truly believes that someone won't flee from the scene of a crash if they have a driver's license--especially if they face deportation in addition to any criminal or civil penalties they might incur. It's even harder to imagine that someone who faces such a stiff punishment actually handing over their license or even applying for one in the first place.

This might be dismissed as mere pandering to his audience, but the fact that Milwaukee's top cop wants to confer a benefit (the ability to drive legally) on those who are engaging in ongoing illegal behavior is troubling to say the least.
