PenFed Blimp Crashes at Erin Hills, Pilot Injured

A PenFed blimp crashed at the U.S. Open at Erin Hills shortly after 11:15 Thursday morning.  A source on the scene reported that the blimp burst into flames and deflated before crashing to the ground just east of the golf course.

The pilot, the only person on board, parachuted to safety. Flight for Life transported him to a nearby hospital but he is expected to be okay.

Twitter user Madison Seigworth uploaded video that appears to show the pilot parachuting out. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

AirSign, a national aerial advertising company, was operating the blimp, which was unaffiliated with the U.S. Open or FOX Sports, the tournament's television broadcast partner, the United States Golf Association said in a tweet.

U.S. Open play was not at all interrupted by the crash, and it does not appear that anyone on the ground was injured.
